Unimaginable scenes as Baltimore bridge collapses

<p>The tranquil waters of Baltimore's Patapsco River turned tumultuous in the early hours of Tuesday following a catastrophic event that shook the city to its core. The aftermath of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse has left a community reeling, with one confirmed fatality and six individuals still missing as rescue efforts persist amid harrowing conditions.</p> <p>The calamity unfolded when a mammoth container ship lost power, careening into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on the US East Coast. The impact tore through the bridge's supports, sending vehicles and people plummeting into the frigid river below. In the chaos that ensued, heroes emerged as authorities swiftly responded, managing to halt traffic on the bridge, averting further catastrophe. However, the toll was already significant, with one individual confirmed dead and six others, believed to be part of a construction crew, still unaccounted for.</p> <p>As the day wore on, Baltimore City Fire Department Chief James Wallace provided updates on the situation, indicating that one survivor had been rescued and rushed to a local trauma centre in critical condition. Meanwhile, the US Coast Guard initiated a relentless search for the missing individuals, leveraging sonar technology to scour the depths of the river.</p> <p>The vessel responsible for the devastation, known as the <em>Dali</em>, was under the management of Synergy Marine Group, navigating under the Singapore flag. Although the crew and pilots were reported safe, the repercussions of the collision have reverberated far beyond the immediate vicinity. US President Joe Biden has pledged federal support for the reconstruction efforts: "This is going to take some time," he said. "The people of Baltimore can count on us, though, to stick with them at every step of the way until the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."</p> <p>The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge not only claimed lives but also severed a vital link in the region's infrastructure. The Port of Baltimore, a bustling gateway for maritime commerce, now faces significant disruption, with vessel traffic suspended indefinitely. Retired Chief Donald Heinbuch, startled from his sleep by the rumbling impact, bore witness to the unimaginable destruction. "Never would you think that you would see physically see the Key Bridge tumble down like that - it looked like something out of an action movie," he said. "And you just think about, most importantly, which is what we all should be thinking about right now, nothing but those families and people that are impacted and those people who are risking their lives right now, for not just Baltimore City and Baltimore County but all over the state, to try to save lives. That should be our focus - the preservation of life. West Side Story returns to Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour

With record-breaking ticket sales and rave reviews, it's no wonder this show stole the hearts of over 65,000 theatre and musical buffs. </p> <p>Directed by the incomparable Francesca Zambello, <em>West Side Story</em> promises to once again whisk audiences away to the bustling streets of New York City, complete with iconic songs, heart-pounding dance numbers, and enough drama to fill the harbour twice over. </p> <p>Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's musical masterpiece will once again take centre stage, accompanied by Jerome Robbins' legendary choreography – and this year, we were fortunate enough to be able to pose a few pre-performance questions to none other than Guy Simpson, the show’s musical director, and the all-singing, all-dancing Wayne Scott Kermond, who is playing “Doc” onstage.</p> <p>Let’s raise the curtain and see what they have to say!</p> <p><strong><img src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/2024/03/Guy-Simpson.jpg" alt="" width="1280" height="720" /></strong></p> <p><strong>Guy Simpson</strong></p> <p>Guy Simpson, a seasoned musical director with nearly 45 years of experience, boasts an illustrious career spanning global productions. Notably, his involvement with iconic shows like <em>Miss Saigon</em> and <em>The Phantom</em> <em>of the Opera</em> has taken him across continents, from Australia to Asia and beyond. Simpson's extensive repertoire includes serving as Musical Supervisor and Director for Opera Australia's acclaimed productions such as <em>Evita</em>, <em>My Fair Lady</em>, and of course <em>West Side Story</em>. Additionally, his contributions as an orchestrator and producer of cast recordings further solidify his stature in the musical theatre realm. With credits ranging from beloved classics like <em>Les Misérables</em> to contemporary hits like <em>Muriel's Wedding</em>, Simpson's versatile talent continues to enrich the world of musical theatre on an international scale.</p> <p><em><strong>OverSixty:</strong></em> What memories do you have of your first time working on <em>West Side Story</em> – when was it and what was the experience like? </p> <p><em><strong>Guy:</strong></em> “I was a rehearsal pianist for the 1983 production of <em>West Side Story</em>. The conductor was Dobbs Franks, who came from the US to conduct the first production of the show in 1960. So I was lucky to learn the show from him. I wasn’t in the orchestra and had tickets to watch opening night but during the afternoon of that day I received a call to play in the orchestra that night because the pianist was unwell. I’ll never forget that! Since then I have conducted three seasons of the show and learn more and more about it each time.”</p> <p><em><strong>OverSixty:</strong></em> What were Bernstein’s influences and what impact did Bernstein’s score have when the musical first premiered? And why do you think it remains so recognised today? </p> <p><em><strong>Guy:</strong></em> “Bernstein was influenced by many things. There is an <a href="https://www.wrti.org/arts-desk/2018-08-23/the-surprising-backstory-to-west-side-story" target="_blank" rel="noopener">excellent article by Debra Lew Harder</a> that outlines these influences. I love the combination of Jewish themes, Puerto Rican rhythm, Mexican dance music and of course American jazz. His classical roots also come in here – especially the music of Aaron Copland and George Gershwin. The genius is Bernstein's ability to blend all this into a score that tells the story so brilliantly."</p> <p><em><strong>OverSixty:</strong></em> What’s your favourite moment in the music that audiences might not always notice but could listen out for?</p> <p><em><strong>Guy:</strong></em> I like what is known as ‘THE BALCONY SCENE’. Most people will know it as the iconic love duet ‘TONIGHT’. In the show this scene moves between spoken dialogue (with underscoring), into the song and back into dialogue in a wonderfully cohesive way. It is so well crafted and is quite a challenge for the conductor to fit the music with the dialogue in a seamless way. I also love the scene in the bridal shop that includes the song ‘ONE HAND ONE HEART’.</p> <p><img src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/2024/03/Wayne-Scott-Kermond-as-Doc.jpg" alt="" width="1280" height="720" /></p> <p><strong>Wayne Scott Kermond</strong></p> <p>Wayne Scott Kermond, hailing from a rich lineage of Australian Vaudeville performers, epitomises the essence of musical theatre, comedy and cabaret. With a repertoire spanning from <em>Anything Goes</em> to <em>Hairspray</em>, including acclaimed performances in several productions of<em> West Side Story</em>, Kermond's versatility shines through. Additionally, he's showcased his creative prowess as the creator and star of captivating cabaret shows such as <em>Candy Man</em> and <em>Jive Junkys</em>. Beyond the stage, Kermond's talents extend to film, where he's contributed to projects like <em>Happy Feet 1 &amp; 2</em>, and as a respected scriptwriter and director for various musicals, cabarets and corporate events. With accolades including a Green Room Award and Mo Award, alongside nominations for Helpmann Awards, Kermond's exceptional abilities and esteemed showbiz heritage solidify his status as an extraordinary Australian talent.</p> <p><em><strong>OverSixty:</strong></em> You and Guy first worked on this musical 40 years ago, how does it feel to be coming back together on the Handa Opera version?</p> <p><em><strong>Wayne:</strong></em> “I first performed in <em>West Side Story</em> at the old Her Majesty’s Theatre (Sydney), 40 years ago playing the youngest member of the Jets gang, ‘Baby John’, and then again in another fabulous production touring Australia / New Zealand in the mid-nineties playing Arab. And so it was lovely to be reminded by Guy on the first day of rehearsals for this season how special it is to us both, here we are, doing it again, just a little greyer."</p> <p>“We shared a few laughs about ‘where did that time go?’, and how ‘young’ we still look after all these years. It’s so great to work with Guy again, I think the last show we did together was <em>Chicago</em>, back in the late nineties. So with Guy's huge amount of expertise and experience at the helm as our Musical Director the show is in great hands. Wait till you hear the amazing Orchestra.”</p> <p><em><strong>OverSixty:</strong></em> What about this musical’s story, lyrics, etc resonate with you and why do you think it keeps being seen on stage? Can it appeal to all ages?</p> <p><em><strong>Wayne:</strong></em> “<em>West Side Story</em> is as iconic to music theatre as <em>Swan Lake</em> is to ballet. All great musicals such as <em>West Side</em> have to have a great love story; <em>West Side </em>certainly has that. And to add to that, also an incredible score, dynamic original choreography and a beautifully written book makes it a triple threat. That's why it stands the test of time – it's an inter-generational piece, whose story and message still stands today, which is the reason why I’m now getting the opportunity to play an adult character ‘Doc’ in this OA production 40 years later, as it will be for another artist, in another 40 years' time.”</p> <p><em><strong>OverSixty:</strong></em> What’s your favourite moment in the show and why?</p> <p><em><strong>Wayne:</strong></em> It is very difficult to say there is a favourite moment as there are so many. The whole journey of the show is something everyone who loves theatre should experience. The Prologue, Dance at the Gym, America, Cool, Tonight, Something's Comin, and not forgetting the Quintet powerhouse... Every part of this show is special, whether you're seeing the show for the first time or for the tenth time, it’s exhilarating, poignant and moving."</p> <p>“It’s especially wonderful for me to have been given the opportunity to revisit the show, after all these years later as a performer. Woman bitten by shark in Sydney Harbour identified

<p>A 29-year-old woman may lose her leg after being bitten by a bull shark while swimming in Sydney Harbour. </p> <p>On Monday night, Lauren O'Neill went for an evening swim near a private wharf in Elizabeth Bay when she was attacked by the shark, screaming out to neighbours for help.</p> <p>Michael Porter told NCA NewsWire he had just gotten home from work when he heard the woman’s scream.</p> <p>“I saw Lauren climbing out of the Harbour on the ladder and she was sort of pulling herself up quite weakly, she didn’t have much strength and there was a whole pool of red blood in the Harbour,” Mr Porter said.</p> <p>“Her leg was limp.”</p> <p>An ambulance was called and transported Lauren to St Vincent's Hospital, where she remains with "serious injuries".</p> <p>While her condition is stable, the 29-year-old is facing the possibility of losing her leg.</p> <p>Marine biologist Lawrence Chlebeck told <a href="https://www.news.com.au/technology/science/animals/woman-bitten-in-sydney-harbour-shark-attack/news-story/c59017954729f2452efc7f26a8a3f0b1" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>news.com.au</em></a> it was “highly likely” to be a bull shark that bit Ms O'Neill, and warned people against swimming in the harbour, particularly in low light.</p> <p>“Bull sharks know they can come into Sydney Harbour and score an opportunistic feed,” he said.</p> <p>“If they can’t see or the water is cloudy, these animals will bite just to determine what something is and whether it’s prey. Michelle Bridges' candid admission on being a single mum

<p>Michelle Bridges has spoken candidly about the challenges of being a single parent to her seven-year-old son Axel. </p> <p>The former <em>Biggest Loser</em> trainer described her son, who she shared with ex-partner and fellow celebrity trainer Steve Willis, as a "confident" little boy. </p> <p>While Bridges was doing radio interviews about a new project, Axel joined in on the fun. </p> <p>The 52-year-old told <a href="https://honey.nine.com.au/parenting/michelle-bridges-single-mum-son-axel-health-and-fitness/2ae072f9-e38c-46ff-b4ba-6e08c99bd33e" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>9Honey</em></a>, "He's just like a little man now, we have good conversations and he's got a really good sense of humour." </p> <p>"He went into that radio station this morning, just jumped on the microphone, started singing and was answering the phone."</p> <p>Bridges said she has purposefully organised her everyday life to be present in her young son's life. </p> <p>"I've kind of engineered my life this way to be able to take him to school and pick him up pretty much every single day," she says.</p> <p>She went on to say her and Axel are "two peas in a pod", while admitting it has been difficult to raise Axel as a single parent. </p> <p>"We're a team and we're very close, extremely close. And yes, it can be challenging and you do need to sometimes rely on other people to help you out," she explains.</p> <p>"I don't have family in Sydney but I have basically my best friend who's like my brother, and they are super tight."</p> <p>"It does take a bit of a village if you've got one great if you haven't you sometimes need to really find it."</p> <p><em>Image credits: Instagram </em></p>

Billy Joel lists New York estate for $73 million

<p>Legendary rocker Billy Joel is <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/entertainment/music/billy-joel-in-tears-over-career-announcement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saying goodbye to The Big Apple</a> as he prepares to sell his jaw-dropping estate.</p> <p>The New York native’s property on the affluent Oyster Bay Harbour has a price guide of a staggering US$49 million (AU$73.4 million).</p> <p>According to the Wall Street Journal, the 26-acre estate comprises the original 14-acre property Joel bought for $22.5 million in 2002 and the adjoining area he’s purchased over the years.</p> <p>The property covers more than 600m of frontage on Centre Island, with the focal point of the estate being the 1,858 sqm main house with breathtaking water views.</p> <p>The home includes five bedrooms, six bathrooms, two half-baths, a playroom, a spa and hair salon, a bowling alley, and a wine centre.</p> <p>There is also an indoor pool, which the Piano Man singer has covered up to use as a music room as it offers fantastic acoustics, according to listing agent Bonnie Williamson, of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty.</p> <p>Parts of the main house are under renovation and are expected to be finished over the next several months.</p> <p>The magnificent estate also has a three-bedroom beach house, a three-bedroom guest apartment, and a four-bedroom gatehouse.</p> <p>Other amenities include a floating dock and boat ramp, two outdoor pools, and a helicopter pad.</p> <p><em>Image credit: Getty / Realestate.com.au</em></p>

Tourist faces $10k fine for jumping into iconic harbour

It's probably cheaper to live in the harbour than some apartments. I absolutely hear you. Going on a show like that back in the day, I really had to dig deep and question my morals about why I’m in the health and fitness industry,” responded Bridges.</p> <p>Helene-Horton said that, having spoken to Bridges, she’d soon realised they had some things in common. </p> <p>“You, like me, are somebody who struggled against the idea that you need to be perfect. But the edit [on <em>The Biggest Loser</em>] still made me feel like someone who had the same values as you … would make me feel shame.”</p> <p>Bridges went on to admit that <em>The Biggest Loser</em> wouldn't "work" today, due to the liberation of the body positivity movement and the change in definition of what it means to be healthy. </p> <p>“When I look back on it, 17 years ago, it was a totally a different culture back then. I don’t think that show would work today. Italian historian makes major Mona Lisa breakthrough

<p dir="ltr">A small town in Tuscany is revelling in excitement after it was claimed that a bridge in the backdrop of the Mona Lisa belongs to the town. </p> <p dir="ltr">Italian historian Silvano Vinceti determined that the bridge in the background of the most famous portrait in the world is in fact the Romito di Laterina bridge in the province of Arezzo: about 80km southeast of Florence. </p> <p dir="ltr">Leonardo da Vinci painted the masterpiece in Florence in the early 16th century, and ever since, it has been subject to disputes over the inspiration for the portrait. </p> <p dir="ltr">The identity of the woman in the painting - who is widely believed to be Lisa del Giocondo – has triggered as much speculation as the distant backdrop.</p> <p dir="ltr">Past theories have identified the bridge as Ponte Buriano, close to Laterina, as well as Ponte Bobbio in the northern Italian city of Piacenza.</p> <p dir="ltr">Using historical documents and drone images, and by making comparisons between the painting and photographs of the area, Vinceti said he is confident it was “the Etruscan-Roman bridge, Romito”.</p> <p dir="ltr">Vinceti told reporters in Rome that the most telling detail of the bridge’s identity is the number of arches. </p> <p dir="ltr">The bridge in Leonardo’s painting had four arches, as did the Romito. Ponte Buriano, on the other hand, has six arches, while Ponte Bobbio has more than six.</p> <p dir="ltr">Another telltale sign, according to Vinceti, is the fact that the bridge was once a “very busy, functioning bridge”, that provided a shortcut between Florence and Arezzo.</p> <p dir="ltr">Simona Neri, the mayor of Laterina, said Vinceti’s theory had caused a lot of excitement in the town of just over 3,500 people. </p> <p dir="ltr">She said, “We need to try to protect what’s left of the bridge.”</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p>

Michelle Bridges re-lists Southern Highlands home for under $5 million

<p>Fitness guru Michelle Bridges has put her Southern Highlands 10-acre oasis back on the market after it previously <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/property/real-estate/real-estate-s-biggest-loser-michelle-bridges-fails-to-sell-home" target="_blank" rel="noopener">failed to secure a buyer</a>.</p> <p>Bridges put the five-bedroom, three-bathroom home at 1840 Kandaloon Road, Kangaloon, NSW, on the market with a new agency and price guide.</p> <p>The property was originally listed by Ben Olofsen of The Agency Southern Highlands with an auction guide of $6.5 million. It has since been listed by Gene Fairbanks and Kathryn Pogson-Pike of Ray White Bowral, with a price guide of $4.6 million to $4.8 million.</p> <p>An auction date for the property is yet to be published.</p> <p>The property is described as a "picturesque acreage haven” on the listing. Bridges had previously shared the original listing on her Instagram page.</p> <p>The 10-acre oasis is set on an elevated position allowing for undisturbed views of the region’s rolling hills and has two living rooms and multiple entertaining options.</p> <p>The home includes a terrace, outdoor pool, tennis court and pavilion, which will suit buyers planning to entertain guests.</p> <p>There is also accommodation located above the garage.</p> <p>Expansive windows make for a stunning view of Kangaloon, a village in the Southern Highlands in the Wingecarribee Shire.</p> <p>Kangaloon has a population of just 162, making it ideal for those who wish to steer clear of the hustle and bustle of the city.</p> <p>The fitness fanatic has become a household name with her multiple appearances on TV, a clothing line and fitness program 12WBT. Real estate’s ‘Biggest Loser’ Michelle Bridges fails to sell home

<p dir="ltr">Fitness entrepreneur Michelle Bridges has failed to sell her $6.5m Kangaloon home, amid plans to go back to Sydney.</p> <p dir="ltr">The former <em>Biggest Loser</em> trainer initially bought the five-bedroom home in 2017 for $2.7m for her family when she outbid chef Luke Mangan.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 4.1 hectare estate was listed last month with initial reports suggesting that the home should be sold for $7m. However, the private price guidance had offered it to buyers for $6.5m</p> <p dir="ltr">Now, The Agency real estate company has revised the price guide back down to $5m, after they failed to secure a buyer for the original price.</p> <p dir="ltr">The property, which is built on a hill offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, with floor to ceiling windows in the main living room.</p> <p dir="ltr">The main bedroom has an ensuite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe, but the interior is not the only thing that’s worth boasting about.</p> <p dir="ltr">The luxurious estate has an in-ground pool, a tennis court and landscaped gardens which feature established trees and vegetable gardens designed by Michael Bligh.</p> <p dir="ltr">Other features include an outdoor dining area, an entertainment pavilion with a small fire pit, and a separate guest house complete with a loft bedroom and modern bathroom.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Realestate.com.au, Getty</em></p> <p dir="ltr"> </p>

Former Nine mogul John Westacott dies in Sydney Harbour

<p dir="ltr">A man who died after falling from a boat in Sydney Harbour over the weekend has been identified as former Nine Network titan John Westacott, the network’s former head of news and current affairs.</p> <p dir="ltr">Emergency services arrived at the harbour near Vaucluse at about 1.30pm on Sunday, after Mr Westacott fell off the boat near Neilson’s Park, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, after suffering from a suspected medical episode, as reported by <em>The Guardian</em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">Mr Westacott was helped from the water by police and treated by paramedics onshore.</p> <p dir="ltr">He was unable to be revived and died at the scene.</p> <p dir="ltr">According to a statement from NSW Police on Sunday, an 18-year-old man was also onboard at the time and was uninjured and returned to shore.</p> <p dir="ltr">Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the 73-year-old’s death, with a report to be prepared for the coroner.</p> <p dir="ltr">Mr Westacott is survived by his wife Cecile and two sons.</p> <p dir="ltr">On Monday, Channel Nine released a statement paying tribute to Mr Westacott as a trailblazer in Australian television.</p> <p dir="ltr">“He was the longest-serving and most successful Executive Producer of 60 Minutes, a driving force of A Current Affair and a visionary with Nine as the National Director of News and Current Affairs,” Director of TV Michael Healy and Darren Wick, the National Director of News and Current Affairs, said in a joint statement.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Westy was an enigma. There was no-one like him. He didn‘t care about political correctness and would publicly declare that.</p> <p dir="ltr">“He didn‘t care where you came from, nor about your gender, ethnicity or religious and political beliefs. He cared about whether you had the passion and ability to tell a great story.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Westy made Nine a better place. He was a big vision, big picture person who made us all reach for the stars and land on them.</p> <p dir="ltr">“We will miss him.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Channel Seven TV executive Mark Llewellyn told <em>The Daily Telegraph</em> of Mr Westacott’s love of sailing and news, recalling one time where took part in the 1994 Sydney to Hobart as a <em>60 Minutes</em> reporter and deckhand.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Westy loved the news game almost as much as he loved sailing,” Mr Llewellyn said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“If he could combine the two he would be in seventh heaven - in fact, he did. Once sailing his little yacht in the treacherous Sydney to Hobart with Charles Wooley as both seasick deckhand and <em>60 Minutes</em> reporter. About 200 dead whales have been towed out to sea off Tasmania – and what happens next is a true marvel of nature

<p>Australians watched in horror as 230 pilot whales became stranded at a beach near Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania’s west coast. Some whales were saved, but the vast majority died. This left a big problem: what to do with all the rotting whale carcasses?</p> <p>Authorities decided to tow the dead animals out to sea, hoping they’ll eventually sink to the seafloor.</p> <p>Such mass whale strandings are sad to witness. But in this case, the aftermath presents a fascinating opportunity for scientific discovery.</p> <p>As the dead whales decompose, an astonishing and rare chain of events is likely to flow through the marine ecosystem – ultimately leading to an explosion of activity and new life.</p> <h2>A 600-tonne problem</h2> <p>Mass whale strandings happen fairly regularly – especially in Tasmania – yet no one really knows why.</p> <p>Days before this latest incident, <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-09-20/sperm-whales-stranded-off-king-island-tasmania/101457406" target="_blank" rel="noopener">14 sperm whales</a> became stranded off King Island, northwest of Tasmania.</p> <p>And in 2020, about 470 pilot whales <a href="https://theconversation.com/like-trying-to-find-the-door-in-a-dark-room-while-hearing-your-relatives-scream-for-help-tasmanias-whale-stranding-tragedy-explained-146674" target="_blank" rel="noopener">became stranded</a> at Macquarie Harbour. While many were pulled out to sea, some of those carcasses washed up and were left to rot on the beach – an entirely natural process.</p> <p>However, pilot whales are big animals. Males weigh up to 2,300kg, which means they take a long time to decompose. The smell of two tonnes of rotting whale blubber soon becomes unbearable, so carcasses are frequently buried.</p> <p>This time around, authorities <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-09-25/whale-carcasses-towed-out-to-sea-after-mass-stranding/101471166" target="_blank" rel="noopener">decided to tow</a> the dead animals out to sea. The ABC reported local salmon farm workers took almost 11 hours to dispose of 204 dead whales with a combined weight of between 500 and 600 tonnes.</p> <p>They were tied to a 400 metre-long rope and towed by boats for 40 kilometres, before being dropped into deep water in the Indian Ocean.</p> <p>Some carcasses may wash back to shore, but most are likely to disperse with the tides and currents.</p> <h2>Shark bait? Probably not</h2> <p>The big question is: what happens to all that whale mass dumped at sea?</p> <p>Initially, a dead whale tends to float to the surface as it begins to decompose and its innards expand with gas. As this happens, ocean scavengers such as sharks and seabirds are likely to feast on the remains.</p> <p>Some people <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-04-14/do-buried-whale-carcasses-really-attract-sharks/10996512" target="_blank" rel="noopener">can be concerned</a> that whale carcasses attract sharks that might pose a risk to humans.</p> <p>Granted, encounters between sharks and humans, are <a href="https://theconversation.com/fatal-shark-attacks-are-at-a-record-high-deterrent-devices-can-help-but-some-may-be-nothing-but-snake-oil-150845" target="_blank" rel="noopener">on the rise</a> in Australia and elsewhere. But they’re still very rare.</p> <p>A <a href="https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0024/167613/swim-humpback-whales-risks-sharks.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> to the Western Australian government in 2012 found whale carcasses were a risk factors associated with shark attacks, and said caution should be exercised near a dead whale in the water.</p> <p>But the same report noted that of 26 shark attacks investigated, the highest number occurred more than a kilometre offshore. While there is no doubt <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gecco.2019.e00655" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sharks are attracted to dead whales</a>, the data is <a href="https://hakaimagazine.com/news/beached-whales-are-a-lure-for-hungry-sharks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">not clear</a> on whether a whale carcass leads directly to an increase in shark attacks on people.</p> <p>Research <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2351989419301854?via%3Dihub" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has shown</a> the likelihood of whale carcasses washing towards shore, where shark scavenging can be observed, is low. So as long as the carcass is taken far from shore and people keep their distance from it, the threat to humans from shark encounters appears to be exceedingly low.</p> <h2>From death comes new life</h2> <p>Inevitably, the whale carcass will start to sink. Most life in the ocean is found fairly close to the sea surface, so if the water is relatively shallow much of what’s left of the carcass will be quickly eaten by scavengers once it reaches the sea floor.</p> <p>But these carcasses have been disposed of in deep water. The deep ocean can be a barren place, where rich food sources are rare. So the appearance of a single whale carcass can supercharge an entire ecosystem.</p> <p>New life and activity can erupt around the dead animal in very little time. This process is known as “whale fall” and has been studied by scientists, sometimes using remotely operated vehicles. On the seafloor of the North Pacific, whale fall has been found to <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fevo.2022.885572/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">support the survival</a> of at least 12,490 organisms of 43 species.</p> <p>Deep sea sharks will make the most of the carcass. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZzQhiNQXxU" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A host of other animals</a> including hagfish, octopus, crabs, lobsters, worms and sea cucumbers will join in too. All the while bacteria work away quietly in the background.</p> <p><a href="https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/what-happens-when-whales-die.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to</a> Britain’s Natural History Museum, a single whale can provide animals with food for up to two years during the scavenging stage.</p> <p>Other animals and bacteria survive off the chemicals produced from the rotting carcass.</p> <p>These organisms, known as “chemotrophs” were thought to be unique to underwater volcanic vents, where they use hydrogen sulphide as the principal energy source. <a href="https://doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2016.2337" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Research</a> has shown a similar suite of animals recruit around dead and decaying whales – generating a completely independent ecosystem based on a gas that <a href="https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/what-happens-when-whales-die.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">smells like rotten eggs</a>.</p> <p>Only a few organisms can break down the bones that remain, in a process that might take up to ten years.</p> <p>So take a moment to consider the effect of 204 whale falls in a small part of the ocean off Tasmania. Why turning old city bridges into new urban parks is such a great idea

<p>The recent opening of the <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/castlefield-viaduct/features/a-garden-in-the-sky" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Castlefield Viaduct Sky Park</a> in Manchester, UK, has brought fresh attention to the growing number of projects that reuse urban infrastructures to create linear parks.</p> <p>When the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2017/jun/07/paris-promenade-plantee-free-elevated-park-walkway-bastille-bois-de-vincennes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Promenade Plantée</a> opened in 1993 on top of an abandoned railway viaduct in Paris, it was reportedly the first of its kind. It provided local residents a green escape, ten metres above the tarmac of the street below, and a beautiful, three-mile meander from the Bois de Vincennes to Bastille. Built on top of a disused stretch of elevated freight rail line in western Manhattan, the High Line garnered considerable <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/09/arts/design/09highline-RO.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3x4e1dALkhc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">media</a> coverage from the outset. It has been rightly championed as a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/15/arts/design/15highline.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">success story</a>, attracting eight million visitors a year and <a href="https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/nycs-high-line-park-marks-10-years-of-transformation/1646268/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fostering new economic activity</a>.</p> <figure><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/M8H8dqMjUCo?wmode=transparent&start=0" width="100%" height="400" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></figure> <p><span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">But</span> not everywhere else is wealthy Manhattan. By reinvigorating the industrial heritage and cultural identity of a place, this approach can <a href="https://idus.us.es/bitstream/handle/11441/116705/TS2_Libro-de-Actos_-Proceedings-Book-1-655-669.pdf?sequence=1&isAllowed=y" target="_blank" rel="noopener">increase tourism</a> which can have mixed results.</p> <p><a href="https://cityparksalliance.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Equity_and_Parks_Funding_7.16.19.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Recent research</a> has shown that without policies in place to ensure that lower-income local communities can enjoy the benefits of newly greened spaces, including health benefits, these projects can actually exacerbate inequality by raising property values and causing the displacement of long-term residents who can’t afford to stay. Urban planning experts talk about green gentrification, as has been noted in the case of the <a href="https://www.chicagoreporter.com/green-gentrification-and-lessons-of-the-606/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">606 linear park in Chicago</a>, among others.</p> <p>Instead of simply trying to copy what has been done elsewhere, this type of regeneration is best done when attuned to the local heritage. As Historic England <a href="https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/publications/wellbeing-and-the-historic-environment/wellbeing-and-historic-environment/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has emphasised</a>, the best way to steward heritage sites and the historic environment is by keeping people’s wellbeing in mind. The era of <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/1587078" target="_blank" rel="noopener">grand visions for public parks</a> is largely over, as most cities are already full. Both spatially and economically, forming large green spaces from scratch is not possible.</p> <p>Reworking old railway lines and bridges into parks, conversely, contributes to a wider strategy of adaptive reuse and what designers term <a href="https://www.archdaily.com/948304/urban-acupuncture-regenerating-public-space-through-hyper-local-interventions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">urban acupuncture</a>. As pressure increases on how we use resources and keep carbon in the ground wherever possible, <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10708-021-10474-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">enabling everyone</a> to have access to green space for <a href="https://theconversation.com/more-parks-and-waterways-in-cities-could-prevent-premature-deaths-study-finds-170973" target="_blank" rel="noopener">health reasons</a> is critical.</p> <p>This can be challenging in those cities where a large proportion of residents do not have access to private gardens. Capitalising on a city’s vertical space – as elevated walkways do – is a huge advantage in high-density cities where significant pressure on ground-level space exists. What’s more, the structures being turned into parks are usually found in those parts of a city that are post-industrial and in need of regeneration.</p> <p>In terms of environmental impact, these parks have great potential. Research on the <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1755-1315/143/1/012061" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Seoullo 7017 Skygarden</a> in Seoul, a linear park built atop a disused highway overpass which cuts across the city’s main rail station, has shown that rewilding and landscaping urban infrastructures is more cost effective and less environmentally impactful than completely replacing them.</p> <p>There is growing evidence of how important <a href="https://academic.oup.com/bioscience/article/67/9/799/4056044" target="_blank" rel="noopener">biodiversity in cities</a> is, not just during daylight hours but <a href="https://theconversation.com/cities-need-to-embrace-the-darkness-of-the-night-sky-heres-why-149129" target="_blank" rel="noopener">at night</a> too. Reused infrastructure projects can play an important role in providing ecological corridors across <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1439179121000074" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cities for nocturnal creatures</a>. Supporting both human and non-human life in this way is a valuable step towards <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2021/06/cities-ecosystems-biodiversity-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">improving</a> the sustainability and resilience of places.</p> <p>Linear parks thus <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/329947799_The_Sustainable_Vertical_City_Research_Project" target="_blank" rel="noopener">weave nature</a> into the flow of a city. They support wildlife. They encourage sustainable transport and physical activity (walking, biking, jogging). They are, as landscape architect Diana Balmori puts it in her 2010 book, <em><a href="https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300156584/a-landscape-manifesto/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A Landscape Manifesto</a></em>, dynamic spaces: “not peaceful retreats but ways”.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Man “driving like a madman” causes shocking crash on Melbourne bridge

<p dir="ltr">Three men have been arrested for being in a vehicle with false plates after a horrific crash on Melbourne’s West Gate Bridge left the driver hospitalised and another fighting for his life.</p> <p dir="ltr">A silver Ford Falcon XR6 collided with a St Vincent’s charity truck on the bridge in Spotswood on Tuesday morning, with witnesses reporting the Ford was being driven “like a madman”, per <em><a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10982161/West-Gate-Bridge-Shocking-crash-Melbourne-highway.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Daily Mail Australia</a></em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">The truck rolled onto its side, forcing four lanes which connect the western suburbs and airport to the rest of the city to be closed.</p> <p dir="ltr">It is understood a person was thrown from the vehicle in the collision.</p> <p><span id="docs-internal-guid-92a49b31-7fff-08a8-7bf3-7c02cfc8ad9e"></span></p> <p dir="ltr">The 21-year-old Ford driver was taken to hospital, where he is in a stable condition. Image: 7News</em></p> <p dir="ltr">Three other men, all in their 20s and passengers in the vehicle, were arrested at the scene, with police suspecting the car was stolen due to the presence of false registration plates, which belonged to a blue BMW with registration that expired in 2014.</p> <p dir="ltr">The men have since been released pending further enquiries, while the two men in the van were unharmed.</p> <p dir="ltr">VicTraffic confirmed that all four lanes were operational just after 2.30pm after authorities had cleared the road, though delays were expected to continue for some time.</p> <p dir="ltr"><span id="docs-internal-guid-a1b7276c-7fff-2165-8035-c523a8507500"></span></p> <p dir="ltr">“Thanks again for your patience as emergency services conducted investigations,' VicTraffic said.</p> <p dir="ltr">One witness told Radio 3AW that the roads were entirely blocked, with police and ambulance unable to get through.</p> <p dir="ltr">“There's a number of individuals lying there being attended to by the public, because the ambulance and the police just can't get through because the roads are entirely blocked,” they told the station.</p> <p dir="ltr">Another, who was travelling outbound on the bridge, said the Ford sped past him “like a bullet”.</p> <p dir="ltr">“He was driving like a mad man,” they said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I thought to myself he won't make it to the other side of the bridge.”</p> <p dir="ltr">One woman who was at the scene moments after the crash told Daily Mail Australia that she saw paramedics treating one person who was on the ground.</p> <p dir="ltr">“There were about fifty cars with police, ambulance and firefighters,” she said.</p> <p dir="ltr">Police investigating the crash say the circumstances surrounding it are still to be determined, while anyone with information, dash cam footage or who witnessed the crash are being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.</p> <p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><em>Image: 7News</em></p>

Woman hit with repair bill for bridge she “could have died” on

<p dir="ltr">Five years after her car crashed through the fences on a bridge and plunged into the water below, a NSW woman has been charged thousands for the damage caused - despite arguing that the fences are “totally inadequate” for stopping accidents like hers.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I could have died that night because of that bridge and now they have the hide to send me a bill for repairs!” Maroney told <em><a href="https://9now.nine.com.au/a-current-affair/nsw-woman-sent-repair-bill-for-bridge-following-car-accident/9efe38b1-59bb-4c48-8fda-aa7ef2e64709" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A Current Affair</a></em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">Deb Maroney continues to be traumatised after the incident, where her Ford Falcon slid on the greasy surface of the road on Swansea Bridge in heavy rain on a winter’s night five years ago.</p> <p dir="ltr">Crashing through two fences on the bridge near Newcastle, Maroney’s car plunged into the deep water channel beneath the bridge.</p> <p dir="ltr">Maroney has received ongoing therapy since, telling the Channel 9 program that she still has trouble going over the bridge to this day.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I can’t even go through a carwash because of the water hitting the car,” she said.</p> <p><span id="docs-internal-guid-c7a06f00-7fff-71c5-c11a-4d42f3f24455"></span></p> <p dir="ltr">When the bill for $11,750 arrived recently, it brought up all sorts of feelings for Maroney, including anger.</p> <p dir="ltr"><img src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/2022/07/bridge-bill.jpg" alt="" width="1280" height="720" /></p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Deb Maroney was asked to pay an eye-watering $11,758 for repairs to the bridge. Image: A Current Affair</em></p> <p dir="ltr">“All these years on the NSW Roads and Maritime have decided to charge me for the damage caused by the accident,” she said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“The two fences protecting motorists on the north side of the bridge are totally inadequate.</p> <p dir="ltr">“One is nothing more than a school fence and the other looks like a swimming pool fence.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Maroney added that her car still went “straight into the water” after hitting not one, but two fences.</p> <p dir="ltr">“If they had been something substantial, I would have been okay,” she said.</p> <p dir="ltr">She isn’t the only one concerned about the safety of the bridge, with former Lake Macquarie councillor John Gilbert campaigning for the bridge to be upgraded for a decade.</p> <p dir="ltr">“But they just refuse,” he told <em>A Current Affair</em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Deb should be sending the RMS a bill, not them sending her one.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Since <em>A Current Affair</em>’s coverage of Maroney’s story, the RMS have contacted her, telling her the bill had been waived and apologising for the stress.</p> <p dir="ltr">However, there has been no word on whether the bridge fencing will be upgraded.</p> <p dir="ltr">“It’ll kill someone one day,” Maroney said.</p> <p dir="ltr"><span id="docs-internal-guid-2f2d1f0e-7fff-a710-5e32-0431b754044a"></span></p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: A Current Affair</em></p>

“This is our home”: Aussie family forced from home for new bridge

<p dir="ltr">An Australian farming family is being forced to move from the farm they have owned for the past 22 years after it was decided a road would be run right through the centre - despite the property being surrounded by acres of vacant land.</p> <p dir="ltr">Marian and Peter Wilcox have been growing vegetables on their 15-acre North Richmond property for over two decades, but have been told their land will be turned into a road to provide access to a new bridge.</p> <p dir="ltr">The family have been hit with a notice from the NSW Government, Hawkesbury Council and a developer that their property would be forcibly acquired as part of the Redbank Communities project.</p> <p dir="ltr">Speaking to <em>A Current Affair</em>, Ms Wilcox said the family were completely blindsided by the decision.</p> <p dir="ltr">“This is our home. We had no idea this was coming,” she said.</p> <p dir="ltr">Ms Wilcox said she first found out about the plan for their home at a community meeting with other locals.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I found out at a community meeting in front of a whole lot of other people,” she recalled.</p> <p dir="ltr">“They just put a picture of our property up on the screen and said this is where the road is going to run and that is how I found out. It was very heartless.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The road is needed to connect a new bridge that is forming a major part of the Redbank North Richmond project and will cost $23.8 million to build.</p> <p dir="ltr">“It has purposely been directed to go through the house. Our property was not going to be touched at all,” Ms Wilcox claimed.</p> <p dir="ltr">“What we have here, it just doesn’t matter to them. Our family does not matter to them, our family home does not matter.”</p> <p dir="ltr">But, documents obtained by the Wilcox’s through freedom of information indicated that the original plans would have seen the road go through the neighbouring property, belonging to horse breeder and local real estate mogul John Starr.</p> <p dir="ltr">A Current Affair claimed there was evidence that the planned road had to “avoid the private land housing the horse stud”.</p> <p dir="ltr">“The road (has to be) designed to avoid the Starr property,” the documents reportedly read.</p> <p dir="ltr">Though there is no evidence to suggest Mr Starr was involved in the changes, the Wilcox family are still looking for answers.</p> <p dir="ltr">Adam, the Wilcox’s son, said the farm was “all I know” and that he had planned his future around it.</p> <p dir="ltr">“There’s vacant land there. Put(ting) it straight through someone’s house, it just doesn’t make sense,” he said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I don’t know how much stress they have put on me and my parents. Just for what? Nothing.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Linda Perrine, the Hawkesbury City Council Director of City Planning, told the program that the road’s design was part of a joint discussion between Hawkesbury City Council, Transport for NSW and Redbank Communities.</p> <p dir="ltr">Ms Perrine explained that the original route was changed to its current path in February 2020.</p> <p dir="ltr">“The original route for the proposed bridge was through the nearby Navua Reserve,” she explained.</p> <p dir="ltr">“In February 2020, Council considered a report and confirmed its in-principle support for the current route alignment based on the facts that it:</p> <p dir="ltr">a) Does not involve any loss of public open space;</p> <p dir="ltr">b) Provides greater flood immunity, above 1:100 flood level;</p> <p dir="ltr">c) Minimises impact on heritage and biodiversity;</p> <p dir="ltr">d) Affects only three private property owners;</p> <p dir="ltr">e) Complements a suite of other roadworks upgrades also required to be delivered in the same Voluntary Planning Agreement</p> <p dir="ltr">f) Assists in addressing current traffic levels/congestion”.</p> <p> </p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: A Current Affair</em></p>
